It doesn’t get much better of a start for Alan Koch and his young WFC2 team. Heading onto the road, facing last season’s Western Conference champion, in a state that the team went 0-4 last season, the ‘Caps came out with a gritty 1-0 win in the Orange County Blues’ back yard. Sean Melvin made his professional debut in net for Vancouver and was strong throughout the 90 minutes as the newly constructed back line provided great hope for what’s to come this season.
Brought into provide leadership as well as goals, Grieg marked his WFC2 debut by rising highest to meet Mitch Piraux beautifully whipped in free kick fifteen minutes into the second half. The captain's first of the year proved to be enough as the young backline, featuring 20 year-old debutee Sem de Wit, withstood some hair raising pressure from Orange County in the dying minutes.
The ‘Caps will look to keep their strong start to the season going next weekend, as they head to Portland to face Portland Timbers2 on April 2nd. The WFC2 home opener is set for April 10th as they host the Sacramento Republic to Thunderbird Stadium.
