Victory over Swope Park moves WFC2 into first place in Western Conference

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC2's impressive start to the 2016 USL season continued on Wednesday night with a 2-1 come from behind victory over Swope Park Rangers (2W-2L-1, 7pts) at Children's Mercy Victory Field in Kansas City, MO.

The win moved WFC2 (3W-0L-2D, 11pts) into first place in the USL Western Conference one point ahead of LA Galaxy II.

WFC2 fell behind in the 15th minute after fullback Brett Levis was unable to intercept Daniel Salloi's through ball to Kris Tyrpak. Tyrpak then made a nice move to throw goalkeeper Spencer Richey off balance and then buried a close range shot to open the scoring.

The home team was not able to hold onto the lead for long. In the 30th minute after a period of pressure WFC2 were awarded a penalty kick after Alphonso Davies was fouled by Ranger's Jacob VanCompernolle. Kyle Greig confidently converted the spot kick to record his fourth goal of the season and draw the Thundercaps level.

WFC2 continued to press in the second half, and were rewarded for their efforts in the 54th minute. After a brief scramble at the top of the Ranger's eighteen yard box Grieg was able to head the ball back in the direction of midfielder Ben McKendry. Swope 'keeper Jon Kerpin was unable to to get a hand to McKendry's hard, dipping shot and WFC2 took the lead with over half an hour to play.

Swope Park pressed hard for an equalizer in the final stages of the match. Goalkeeper Spencer Richey made several clutch saves to preserve the lead, and defender Sem de Wit was instrumental in nullifying the Swope attacks late in the match.

WFC2 are next in action on Saturday, April 30th when they face St. Louis FC at World Wide Technology Soccer Park at 7pm.
