WFC2 settle for draw in Oklahoma City

Reunion’s can be bitter sweet.

It wasn’t the ideal return for Vancouver captain Kyle Greig but the ‘Caps 1-1 draw in Oklahoma City will be seen as a valued point none the less. After spending the past two seasons in Oklahoma with the Energy, Grieg returned for the first time with his new team, one that is currently sitting atop the table in the West.

Greig, the leading scorer in the league, was unable to find the net but fellow newcomer Fatawu Safiu was able to get on the board for the visitors. The Ghanaian took a threaded through ball from Debi Flores and rounded the Sacramento keeper before finishing from a tight angle in the 26th minute.

The Energy would equalize on the stroke of halftime.

Coy Croft collected six yards out and was able to beat Sean Melvin through the legs from a sharp angle moments before halftime. Melvin, who is locked in a tough competition for minutes in the Vancouver net, would have wanted the squeaker back.

In what is turning into a common sight this season, the ‘Caps were able to hold strong in hostile territory, securing yet another valuable point and insuring that their road record remains but with a single blemish thus far through the season.

Melvin shook off the first half goal to play a key part in securing the draw. The rookie keeper did well to deny Wojciech Wojcik from in close in the 84th before stoning Peter Toth in the 87th as the Energy looked close to finding the winner.

Ben McKendry had the ‘Caps best chance of the second half but his acrobatic volley flew just past the post in the 49th.

The match represented the official end of the first half of the season for WFC2, a season which sees them currently three points up on Los Angeles and with a game in hand.
