Whitecaps FC 2 suffer first defeat of the season

Unbeaten no more. Whitecaps FC 2 suffered their first defeat of the 2016 USL season after allowing a goal in the dying seconds of the game at the 95th minute. The goal gave the Real Monarchs SLC a 1-0 win on Saturday night at Thunderbird Stadium.

Alan Koch dressed up a lineup featuring several players that saw action with the first team in their loss against the Ottawa Fury in the Canadian Championship semi-final on Wednesday night. Players included Sam Adekugbe, Cole Seiler, Ben McKendry, and Marco Bustos.

The WFC2 side were far from displaying their best football. After the game, coach Alan Koch described their team as “sluggish.” Despite a slow start, the Blue and White had several opportunities to open the scoring in the first half; however, it seemed that Kyle Greig, Daniel Haber and company did not lace their scoring boots on for the day.

It was Haber and Greig who combined in the 17th minute inside the box but the captain’s shot was blocked and sent off for a corner. Nine minutes later, Haber rifled a left footed shot that went slightly wide off Eduardo Fernández net.

Ten minutes from half-time it was Greig again who went up for a brave header that sailed just over the bar. Referee Juan Marquez showed Brett Levis a yellow for a reckless sliding tackle at the 36th minute. It could have been a red card.

McKendry sent off a potent shot at the 45th minute outside the 18 yard box but Fernández was up to the task with a brilliant diving save. Koch sent the same eleven back for the second half but tactical adjustments made his team look even more in control.

The chances came from Marco Bustos sending a dangerous shot over the bar at the 67th and Daniel Haber with back to back chances at the 70th minute.

As everyone was getting ready to pack up and settle for what was seemingly a 0-0 draw, Sam Adekugbe was sent to the locker room at the 94th minute after been awarded his second yellow card of the match. In the ensuing free kick, Frederick Amankona was able to slot home a rebound inside the box. The Monarchs invaded the pitch in a celebration resembling a World Cup win.

Juan Marquez blew his whistle awarding the goal and ending the match at the same time.

It was a heartbreaking loss for a team that has not faced adversity all year long.

Although disappointed, Alan Koch is somewhat relieved that the “undefeated” label has been lifted off his team. “I wasn’t ecstatic about being undefeated, I was ecstatic about the undefeated record but now this gives us a little bit of perspective, you have to go and fight every single game. There is no guarantee that you will get something out of every single game like we saw today. So today, other than the match being a lesson, the result is a bit of a lesson for us too. You have to be hungry and you have to play for the full ninety minutes.”

WFC2 will be back at Thunderbird Stadium on Sunday, June 12 to face the Swope Park Rangers at 2pm and they will be looking to return to their winning ways.
